Cancer

Like so many people, I am absolutely devoted to my pets. I can't imagine life without the joy of little four footers. And like a lot of pet owners, I have agonized through several long, sad periods of debilitating drug and radiation treatments in hope that I could prolong my precious animal's life.

My Scottie, Poma, was diagnosed with bladder cancer in June, 2004. The tumor was removed along with half of Poma's bladder. We hoped for the best, but the biopsy revealed very aggressive cancer cells that still remained. Determined not to subject my little girl to the same conventional chemo and radiation therapies I had pursued with my other pets, I opted for a simple anti-inflammatory drug and prayed for the best. However, four months later a new, large tumor had re-grown. Surgery was no longer an option. My vet recommended Dr. Beebe as a viable alternative. The future looked extremely bleak for Poma.

Somewhat skeptical but also feeling that Dr. Beebe was our last hope, my partner and I took Poma to the alternative veterinary clinic in Sacramento. The environment there is relaxed, nurturing, restful, healing; a place of wellness and peacefulness. We felt comforted immediately. Dr. Beebe examined Poma's records and spoke to us about the treatment of acupuncture in combination with Chinese herbs she practices. We liked her and we felt optimistic about pursuing this gentler, kinder treatment for Poma. Quality of life is essential, and that is exactly what this treatment promised to allow Poma while we endeavored to fight her cancer.

Three months after beginning treatment with Dr. Beebe, Poma had another ultrasound to identify the progress of the aggressive cancer. Incredibly, the large tumor had grown only a fraction. There was no evidence of it spreading into other vital organs as it typically does. And best of all, Poma acts like her old, happy, silly, adorable self.

The acupuncture treatments are almost painless, and we have had no negative side effects from the various herbs which Dr. Beebe fine-tunes each visit.

In a larger sense, Poma's continuing treatments fighting cancer are a re-education for us. We know that there are no promises of miracle cures, but in fact we witness a different kind of miracle with these treatments of alternative therapy. Poma has been very fortunate thus far. Dr. Beebe has extended her life, free of harsh, debilitating medicines. We are all engaged in a new acceptance and understanding of what life is really about, and that would never have happened for Poma or for us without the alternative herb/acupuncture treatments practiced by Dr. Beebe.

On the night of July 11, 2002, I awoke to hear my dog, Rocky, an 8-year-old male Boxer, licking excessively and smacking his jaws. I turned on the light and found he was bleeding from his mouth.

The next morning, I rushed him to my local veterinarian for emergency surgery to try to stop the bleeding. Rocky had a tumor in his mouth that had broken open.

The vet did the surgery and cut out as much of the tumor as she could and sent it to the lab for testing. Rocky came home and seemed to be doing fine. The lab did not have a definite diagnosis of cancer at this time, but said it was an oral benign extramedullory plasmacytoma -- no mention of cancer.

On August 2, 2002, Rocky started bleeding again during the night. I took him to my local vet the next morning. The tumor had grown back double in size in just two weeks. He did surgery again and took out as much as he could. The lab report diagnosis this time was definitely a cancer called oral plasmacytoma. They gave Rocky 6-8 weeks to live because of the aggressiveness of this tumor.

I cried and cried, thinking 6-8 weeks was not very long. My local vet referred me to a cancer specialist in Sacramento. I took Rocky there and was told he needed radiation and chemotherapy. Also, they would have to cut out part of his jaw to get the entire tumor within the margins. Even with an aggressive treatment, they could not guarantee any success.

I decided to get a second opinion. I took Rocky to a cancer specialist at UC Davis. They said the same thing: cut out half his jaw, radiation and chemo. Rocky was 8 years old at the time. I just could not see putting him through that torture. The oncologist at UC Davis had me try a mild chemo drug plus prednisone. She said I would have to wear gloves to give it to him. Rocky began vomiting from the treatment. I tried several times to give him his medication but he could not tolerate it.

In the back of my mind, I could remember hearing about holistic herbs and I looked on the Internet for a holistic vet. I really had nothing to lose. I found Dr. Signe Beebe in Sacramento. Dr. Beebe said she couldn't promise anything but she would give it a try.

Dr. Beebe changed Rocky's diet and put him on traditional Chinese herbal medications. Within four months, Rocky's tumor had shrunk. Within eight months, his tumor had totally disappeared. It has now been almost two years and my wonderful Boxer, Rocky, is still cancer free and will be 10 years old on May 12th.

I am so thankful to Dr. Beebe for her wonderful care and the Chinese herbal treatments she has given to Rocky. If anyone out there is looking for an alternative medicine approach, I highly recommend trying Traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Just don't wait too long -- many patients are too far along for any treatments to work.
