Chronic Vomiting

Licorice was first diagnosed with chronic vomiting in 1993. He was treated with a variety of Western medications, from those administered to animals as well as those given to humans who had a similar diagnosis. Any time a new medication came out, his veterinarian would advise me of it and we would try it. Each time, I would get my hopes up, thinking that this would cure his problem. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The same held true with any new diet that came out: his veterinarian would advise me of it and I would again get my hopes up, only to find that he would not eat the food.

The only medication that seemed to at least curtail the vomiting to 3-4 times a week was prednisone. At times he was on a minimum daily dose, but when his vomiting exacerbated he was on a very high dose, and many times he simply would not eat, which caused him to lose weight. It was very difficult to see him in that state. The prednisone did not cure him, but it did control the illness to some extent.

Though I was thankful for the prednisone and was advised that cats tolerate prednisone better than dogs, I kept looking for other types of treatment for two reasons: 1) I hoped to get him off the prednisone, because being on it long-term I was worried about the side effects; and 2) I hoped he would feel better, both generally and with his specific illness.

Then, in 1998, I turned to acupuncture and herbs. What a change in him! He was totally weaned from prednisone, he looked forward to eating, he groomed himself again, and his general condition and attitude improved. If he vomits now, 99% of the time he continues to eat anyhow. In addition to his chronic vomiting, Dr. Beebe is also helping him with his arthritis and kidneys, as he is 18 years old.

The care Dr. Beebe is giving him is worth its weight in gold. I know she is always there for him and for me. She is well aware of his age and condition, and she does everything she can to support him and make him as comfortable as possible. Dr. Beebe has an innate gift in caring for and understanding each and every pet. Not only is she well schooled in Eastern medicine, but in Western medicine as well. She is not hesitant to use either or both types of medicine in her treatment, basing the mode of treatment upon whatever is best for the pet.

I strongly urge anyone who feels the current treatment their pet is receiving is not working or who has a pet with a chronic problem to seek out the services of Dr. Beebe.
